Origins of Indian Classical Music

Indian classical music's origins can be found in the Vedas, which are the oldest scriptures in the Hindu tradition. Indian classical music has also been significantly influenced by, or syncretised with, Indian folk music and Persian music.

The Samaveda, one of the four Vedas, describes music at length, laying the foundation for the sophisticated musical systems we cherish today.

Barrackpore's Musical Heritage

Barrackpore is a historic city where the First Independent Movement during British regime known as Sepoy Mutiny started in 1857. The calm city is surrounded by holy river Ganges and has several historic heritage buildings and India's oldest army cantonment.

We inhabitants feel proud as this city bears the foot-prints of Holy Mother Sarada, Swami Vivekananda & Mahatma Gandhi and many others. Rastraguru Surendranath Banerjee was born and breathed his last here.

Our Mission

In the backdrop of Barrackpore's rich musical history, BARRACKPORE SANGEET SABHA in the year 2015 ventured to promote classical music basing on ethics and spirituality.

Since then we have organized two-day long conferences in two historical places of Barrackpore, one in United Kingdom and another at Ramkrishna Mission Institute of Culture (Golpark) Kolkata. Generally we organize annual conference in January remembering the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

The experience of huge enthusiasm from music lovers in previous conferences always inspires us to move forward with our activities in coming days as we believe true music connects souls.
